What to look for?
A common mistake in landscape lighting is placing fixtures randomly and trying to get as much light as possible. To create a beautiful scene, focus on focal points on your home and property, and use soft, even up-lighting.
Arches, gables, and textured surfaces like brick or rock are excellent areas to illuminate. Ornamental trees and evergreens also look spectacular at night.
Consider adding pathway lights along flowerbed borders and walkways - they help balance the overall look and bring out the colors in your flowerbeds.
Can you do it yourself?
Yes - if you’re willing to learn. However, achieving a professional-quality system often requires work and some trial and error.
Can you run wires under sidewalks if needed? Can you measure the voltage at each fixture? Do you have access to high-quality lighting fixtures? Do you understand the basics of how a low-voltage system works?

What can you afford?
Having installed landscape lighting systems for nearly a decade, I know that quality can vary widely - from extremely poor to high-end. If possible, avoid big-box store systems; their quality often falls short.
There are many excellent mid-range fixtures available with strong warranties. It’s also a great time to consider LED lighting. LEDs reduce your electric bill and, more importantly, last much longer than traditional bulbs. Most LEDs on the market are rated for at least five years, saving you time and replacement costs.
